Annville Paradise Garden At The End Of August Poem by NHIEN NGUYEN MD

Annville Paradise Garden At The End Of August

Rating: 5.0

The month of August is almost over
It's warm today and temperature is just above eighty.
The sky is azure blue without a piece of clouds
I wear a conic palm hat to clean up my vegetable garden.
Cucumber vines are not productive and at the end of their lives
I harvest few last cucumbers to bring them into the house.
My baby mustard greens are about one finger high
But high weeds are competing with old mustard plants.
Flowering stalks of mustard greens already turned brown
Wild birds sneaked in to steal some of my old seeds.
Some mustard seeds also dropped on brown soil by the birds
They will grow into mustard green for my sizzling rice cake in a month.
With big leaves, pumpkin vines start to climb up garden fence
I planted them late and now they start to flower.
My wife wants to have young tips of these pumpkin vines
But I promise to harvest them at the end of pumpkin season.
Now, I need growing vines to feed young pumpkins
But in two months, I will collect yellow pumpkin flowers for cooking.
Yellow flowers, baby pumpkins and tender tips of green vines
Will make an excellent dish of stir-fries with shrimps.
My garlic chives grow well with their tender green leaves
Often, I mince these leaves for cooking instead of green onions.
I harvest my garlic chives about every week
For special cooked vegetable dishes or to use it as a fresh herb.
Garlic chives are bolting at this time of the year
Their flower buds will make a good stir-fries dish with shrimp or beef.
I don't have Indian spinach this year
I planted seeds several times but they didn't germinate.
I also don't have bottle gourd this year
I planted gourd seeds twice but didn't see baby plants.
Fortunately, I have luscious Vietnamese Luffa
Their vines on tennis court fence give long fruits and yellow flowers.
I also have cinnamon mint and Vietnamese cilantro
My mint leaves stay young as I always pinch off their flowering tips.
It makes a good dish of chicken breasts with minced Vietnamese cilantro
Also a good dish of Vietnamese noodle soups (Phở) with cinnamon mint.
I think of different dishes as I work on my garden
My beloved wife greets me at the garden with my cup of iced-milk coffee.

May mà tôi có mướp hương
Leo rào Tennis, trái to, bông vàng.
Tôi trồng húng quế, rau răm
Húng tôi bấm ngọn, lá xanh không già.
Rau răm trộn với thịt gà
Phở thêm húng quế càng tăng đậm đà.
Vừa làm, vừa nghĩ món ăn
Càphê sữa đá, vợ thăm, tặng chồng.
