Aparment 75, A Poem On Suicide By Katia Kapovich In Hindi/Urdu Translation

Us moti aurat ne
jo subah 6 bajay apni Subru car chala kar
hamari need haraam kar diya karti thee
ab khud kashi kar li hai.
Baraf maili chadron jaisi
kiDki ke glass par lagi hue hai.
Jab main us ke saatveen manzil k ek kamray k ghar main gayi,
to us k lamp se roshni aa rahi the
lamp apne aap jalta aur buhjta tha
kamray mainjo shaam jaisa dundela tha
lamp uski parvah na karta tha
police ne tab tak kamray ki talash kar li the.

Zindi main pehli dafaa, mere jee main aaya
k main uska chera dekhooN,
aur shayad aisay andaazay se dekhon
jis se hum aksar paDosiaoN ko nahin dekhtay
aur kuhkashi ka kya raaz tha is ko samaj salooN.
Lakin uski laash main koi naraazgi na thee.
Ek kursi jis k picHlay paaey toottay hue thay
ek deevar k saath balance k liyey lagi hue thee.
Siraf vo kursi ab tak mari yaad main hai.

Apartment 75

The obese woman who used to wake up
our whole house by starting her Subaru at 6 a.m.
has committed suicide. Snow
hangs like a set of unlaundered sheets
in the windows. When I walked into
her seventh floor studio, the standard lamp
was still on, but could only light itself,
refusing to interfere with the dull dusk
of the interior the police had already searched.

For the first time, I felt an urge to look at her face
and perhaps to see something more distinctly
than the triviality of neighborhood permits
and the mystery of suicide allows,
but her features were shut down without offense.
I only remember a chair missing its rear legs,
shoved up against the wall for balance.
