Apathy Of Suburbia Poem by Caleb Hall

Apathy Of Suburbia

Dear Elizebeth,
I cannot imagine all that pain
But because I've heard your story
Life will never be the same
I would like to think that
Had I been there, had I known
I would have done something
Seen past the hoe
Seen the scared girl
Seen past the drugs
And recognized the abuse
But all this hope is no use
Because I know-
I wouldn't have cared
To save your life I wouldn't have dared
Excuses and reasons
For why I can't help.

Oh, Elizebeth!
Look at what my fellow man has done to you
You,16, and him,22?
Chained by fear for a year and a half
Add in some drugs? I can do that math
It's not a pleasant thought at all
You'll never be an innocent doll
again. He robbed you of that.
I'll buy a gun; tell me where's he's at.
But that's just talk
Because I know
I dont care.
To save your life, I wouldn't dare
Empathy sparked by your story
The occasional newscast bloody and gory
May call me to action
Or give me a passion
Wake me from my apathy
To notice this hell of Earth.

Now there's a child with a little baggie
His last bread crumb is gone.
He eats up the mud hoping for food
And in the morning coughs up blood
He'll be dead in a few days
But we don't care
To save his life, we wouldn't dare
Cause we've got some homework
And a movie at eight
Bumper to bumper, gunna be late
Damnit, I didn't make the light.

The truth as it stands... Or as we sit.. We all scream at injustice yet rarely stand up and be counted... Bravo.. Karen
