as Nietzsche knew
as Picasso knew
some poets knew
the poet in me knows
a very simple truth
to know
what I am going to write
I must begin writing
the words are not within me
the words are within the universe and I am their voice
I can sometimes write
an entire poem start
to finish word perfect
without knowing what
I am writing
most of my poems
are not chosen topics
a moment a point
in time that could
be fixed measured
arrives
it could
be any time
day or night
anytime free time
relatively relaxed
thus normally daily
I will write rarely
with a plan as to what
how I will write
I will write
because I need to write
as rain needs to fall
as rivers need to flow
as flowers need to grow
I write as I breathe thus not to write
is not to breathe thoughtlessly effortlessly
not to write is not to breathe impossibility
