At The Races. Poem by Michael Walker

At The Races.

Rating: 3.5

Race meetings were something to look forward to,
seeing streamlined sprinters, strong stayers
parade around the birdcage, before a canter
down to the start lineridden by jockeys
who thought in straight lines.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I did enjoy the races and betting small amounts of money, winning at first then losing some. It is now forty years since I went to a race meeting or placed a bet at the TAB (in New Zealand, the Totalisator Agency Board, which is government-run) . I gamble on nothing at all now.
Edgar Degas (1834-1917) did many paintings of racehorses and jockeys, some at racecourses in Paris. Among his paintings are:
'The Jockey', 'Before The Race', and 'Racehorses in Front of the Grandstand'.
