Autumn Trees Poem by Dustin Smith

Autumn Trees

When I look at you, you remind me of a tree
I know that doesn't make sense to you so let me explain please
Your eyes I could get lost in as I do when I look at the autumn leaves
You give me the air that I breathe and without, without you I would suffocate
You've been down many paths which are all represented by your many branches
You've been hurt a few times and fell to your knees just like the twigs falling from your tree
You give your all to everything and everyone around you
They become the birds building their nests within you so they never have to leave what now feels like home
You were too busy bringing life to all the livings things to notice, too busy to notice, that all the living things were sucking the life out of you.
People left their cute little initial carvings on the tree bark, little did they know that they were tattooing scars on your heart.
Just like a tree, your life is full of beauty that doesn't get noticed but even when you die, you'll never be forgotten
Because when we were all down and out, you used the stems of your leafs to stitch us back together.
And this is why when I look at you, you remind me of a tree.
