Je me suis assis sur les bancs des jardins publics a Paris
J'ai faim.
Je me suis assis sur les bancs des jardins publics a New York
J'ai faim.
Et j'ai dit:
Je veux un emploi,
Je veux du travail.
Et l'on m'a dit:
Il n'y a pas d'emplois,
Il n'y a pas de travail,
Donc je me suis assis sur les bancs des jardins publics
Affame,
Au milieu de l'hiver,
Des journees affamees,
Pas d'emplois,
Pas de travail.

Poet's Notes about The Poem

This is like the Great Depression. A man has no job, he is hungry; he sits on park benches. This could just as easily be today. The poem shows compassion for the homeless, hungry people in the world.
There is no sense smugness or rejection of these unfortunates.
