Beat By Bea Poem by Andy Brookes

Beat By Bea

t
Its the best I can do, I said,
with this little snippet of heart.
this nibbled muscle that still beats,
beats a little slower and is a little tougher.

its the best I can do with this 'old heart'
so the record said.
too eroded by disappointment
this heart once expanded by love,
but she hasn't a called lately,
is now flabby and deflated.

the air is strange tonight you said
I agreed but you said at least you still have heart
and I said suppose, such a disdainful answer.

you just smiled and I saw the world in that smile
and bitterness and anger and tender thought and, and, and....
Its the best I can do I said.
you traced the tear that trickled down my cheek
and said I know.

The last two lines say it all. Lovely.
