Belief Is An Incredible Feat

I'm hanging by a thread..."

Belief is an incredible feat of the human mind,
taking us to places none of the other emotion can
reach: belief in self, belief in God, amongst others.
No passion is greater. No fervor more intense,
no boiling point higher. When I was younger,
more naive, I believed in just about everything,
but Life took me aside, whispered into my ear,
sent me to school, and then to the woodshed,
finally sentencing me to hard labor in the Siberia
of the human heart where, at one stage, I lost
all belief like one lost, foresaken in a blizzard.
I shed belief the way a long-haired Yorkie sheds
its hair. Then, quite slowly, you made a believer
of me again, you my Mecca, my most-sought-after
religion of one. What more could you have done
to steep me, better feed this insatiable hunger?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The speaker of the poem, a poet, comments on the importance of belief in someone, though there is very little else to believe in in life.I wrote this poem in counterpoint to another poem of mine that appears in Poem Hunter, "An Addendum to Francis Fukuyama", which rejects all belief and systems of belief.

Kostas, faith and belief have always been concerns of mine. I struggle with both, but have an abiding belief in my wife, Kim Jung Sook.
