Captain Matthews' True Colours Poem by Richard Wlodarski

Captain Matthews' True Colours

Captain Matthews' True Colours

Seize the day, Captain Matthews
Your colors are showing their hues
Mixing it up for the Red White & Blue
Not even stirring for Maple Leaf Blue

Proudly playing for the USA
Stinking it up for neighbourly country
Returning with the worst hockey
In Maple Leafs' history

Where is the honour
In your dishonor?
Where is your great pride
For this country's side?
Where is the courage needed
From captain who's retreated?

You may have great hockey skills
But your leadership now kills
Time to concede your captaincy
To Tavares' decency

A captain leads by example
Not being a fashion sample
In the locker room he roots his team
To recover the Stanley Cup dream

I'm sorry, Auston Matthews
You DON'T have captaincy skills
It's time for the great Keith Pelley
And the whole of MLSE
To see that there's no decency
In your lacklustre captaincy
And return you to A not C
