Christmas Splendour - Christ Is Christmas Joy (A Story You Must Know) Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

Christmas Splendour - Christ Is Christmas Joy (A Story You Must Know)

Rating: 5.0

In the city of Bethlehem, on this day
was born Jesus Christ in a stable
where sheep and cattle at night retired;
a shining star and an angel showed directions
to the three Kings who traveled with gifts
to meet a little child so unknown;
but that little child rose to be revered forever
by those who walked, prayed and endured
their faith in Him, their trust in Him.
And though in Bethlehem was Jesus' nativity,
Constantine the emperor of Rome adhered
to his promise to convert to Christianity;
and directed Pagans to turn to Christianity
to gain religious righteousness and divine blessings
as Constantine himself had received a favour
when Christ had answered his prayer
by making him victorious in a battle he was losing.
Faith in Jesus thus expanded so deeply in Constantine
that he built the church of Nativity in Bethlehem,
and a church on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem
as his token of immense gratitude to Christ His Saviour;
Christianity thereon spread so strongly
over the Roman empire and further
that Christmas was a day of rejoicing,
everywhere, every year and celebrated
with great pomp and splendour for...
Christ is Love, peace and brotherhood
Christ is Christmas joy from Jerusalem
to Rome, to every part of the world.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Constantine, who was a great warrior and man of considerable talents, rose to the top of the political ladder until he was able, through a bloodless coup, to usurp power and become the emperor of Rome.

When he finally became emperor, he took a large Roman army east with the intention of settling the score once and for with all the guerilla bands that were picking Rome apart. On the eve of one of the great battles, in 330 CE, Constantine saw a vision in which his mother stood on the right hand of Jesus. He promised him, "If you will give me victory in this battle, then I will officially become a Christian." Constantine won the battle and fulfilled his promise.

When the emperor became a Christian it meant that the empire became Christian.

Suddenly, the persecuted became the establishment. Constantine cleansed the Roman bureaucracy of pagans and replaced them with Christians. As happens many times with converts, he became more fanatical than those who had long been believers before him. In short, he was determined to make the entire empire Christian.
