Close Your Doors, O My Good Self. Poem by Mohammad Younus

Close Your Doors, O My Good Self.

Close your doors, O My Good Self,
So that fire may not devour your green forests,
The cedar and cypress trees of goodness within --
For forest fire consumes the trees of all goodness,
That the majestic grower has planted in you.

Stop your evil hands, O My Evil self,
Cut down not the thick green forests within,
Listen to the wailing of the singing bird,
For its green foliage has been destroyed.
Harken the Shepherd, roaring at you,
For his flocks of sheep have no pastures,
Left by you for their grazing.

Be happy and pleased, O contented soul.
For the thickets in the Valley of Heart are regrown,
As the Evil nafs is no more there with scythe in hand,
To cut off your plants of heaven within.
It is all by the grace of the Gracious One,
Not so much by your efforts, you brag about.
