Coffee & Gum Poem by SJ. Sharkey

Coffee & Gum

Coffee and gum, type-type-typing
Pen and paper, impatient toe-tapping
Run of the mill, one among many
Leader of the pack, in a pound for a penny
A sow to silk, no purer than milk
Pasteurised and sterilised

Broken nails, battered paws
Relentless listeners, wobbling jaws
Money lending, people spending
Unremarkable or well rehearsed
Selling my soul or filling my purse?

Resigned to work, working to resign
What to do with this misguided life of mine?
Deaf and blind, soon to be dumb
Coffee and gum; the senses go numb
