Coin Sud-Est. (Translation) .
La Maison de la Beaute est une taverne maintenant.
La Madame est sous terre.
La-bas au cimetiere Lincoln, parmi les tombesOn trouve bientot la sienne.
Ou le monument le plus epais et le vplus haut
Fend magnifiquement dans l'air
La Madame est enterree, contente.
Sa fortune, aussi, s'y couche,
Convertie en l'acier frais et dur
Et en doublure de velours evidemment rouge;
Tandis que sur son expression impassible et bronzee
De la soie epuisee brille.

Madam used to be the owner-manager of a school of beauty, like a finishing school for ladies. Now she rests in Lincoln Cemetery, Chicago, where Gwendolyn Brooks is buried too. The Madam's grave is in the south-east corner, marked by the highest monument and much expense. Her casket is lined with velvet and spoiled silk. The poem implies that all her wealth and success did not mean much after she died. Sometimes I get such a feeling in a graveyard.
Gwendolyn Brooks won the Pulitzer Prize in 1950.
