Commitment Poem by Barry Middleton

the high diver
stands at great height
and pauses
to make sure he's right
when he feels it is time
and he's made up his mind
he commits to the dive
and he sails into flight

now he knows
there is no going back
there is no way
to take up the slack
he may score a ten
and then he may win
if he's properly
gotten the knack

or he may soon discover
we cannot recover
once committed
one can never
adjust or retract
