Compulsive Shopper Poem by Juan Olivarez

Compulsive Shopper

Sometimes shopping
On an empty stomach
Is not an ideal situation
Never shop before breakfast
When an African Lion
Resides in your gut

I wind up back at home
With a semi trail or
Busting at the seams with groceries
Jelly doughnuts milky way bars
And several cases of soda pop
Plus three or four Rod McKuen books

I know
Go figure I suppose my brain
Seeks nourishment too
So I make a detour at Stater Brothers
Head west
And wind up at the Raven Book Shoppe

Eat Breakfast

Entirely true. Anyone who has made the mistake of grabbing groceries with a lion in their gut can relate. Usually ends up that we buy a lot of junk food and forget often about the fruits and veggies. Very funny, especially since I've done the very same thing myself
