Cowboy Heroes Poem by Juan Olivarez

Cowboy Heroes

Rating: 5.0

With six shooters blazing, and thundering hoofs,
Gene and Smiley rode into the west.
They were the good guys, with all the right moves,
Silver screen cowboys, simply the best.

The Ranger had Tonto, his indian friend,
Together they fought evil, wherever found.
On Silver and Scout they cris-crossed the land,
living by their camp fires, sleeping on the ground.

And Cisco and Pancho, chasing the crooks,
on Diablo and Loco, in a cloud of dust.
Cisco was a fighter, preferring his dukes,
and Pancho was silly, but he was a must.

Roy Rogers and Trigger, Dale and buttermilk,
Pat driving Nelly Belle all over the land,
and Nelly Belle's gas gauge was always on tilt,
as they rode out after the outlaw band.

Cowboys had side-kicks and these are a few,
Whopper, California, Gabby, Chito, and Pat,
Fuzzy, Soapy, and Lucky, all were true blue,
These were the ones that wore the side-kick hats.

Silver screen cowboys these are a few,
there were so many all over the west,
All were heroic, but we always knew,
John Wayne, tall in the saddle, was simply the best.

Riding off in the sunset, winning the day,
beating the bad guys and getting the girl,
We always wondered, why he did'nt stay,
He was the best cowboy, in the whole doggone world.

We sure could use some more like these grand ol' guys now-a-days. Perhaps when it comes around for us to saddle up one last time, and ride over that far hill they'll be there waiting, all smiles, saying welcome to the home ranch vaqueros! Let the fandango begin! Until then: Happy-Trails mi amigo...
