Criminals Are Empowered, Justice Is Denied Poem by Daya Nandan

Criminals Are Empowered, Justice Is Denied

If my self-defense resulted in a criminal's death,
Should i be punished because he had his last breath?
I mean he broke into my home with a gun and a knife,
Injured my family and tried to take my life.

Should i be punished for defending my loved ones?
Should i have ran and hid while he murdered my daughters and sons?
I do not see the logic behind laws for criminal safety and rights,
When they kill and steal throughout the days and nights,

Why defend criminals when they clearly have intent to steal and hurt,
Why blame the victim's self-defense when it puts them six feet under dirt?
Blame the damned criminals for it was their choice to risk getting killed!
It is their own stupidity that resulted in their blood being spilled,

Would the government be responsible if he had killed my wife?
Would they somehow find a way to bring her corpse back to life?
It is impossible, so do not leave us at the mercy of their guns and knives,
Stop empowering criminals so we can save our own lives!
