In the gloomy city solemn,
After sounds of the night watch signal and drum,
Strutting out of his abode
The cock crows several times in the cold.

People awakened from their dreams deep,
But none's angry disturbed in their sleep;
They're concerned if the cries at midnight
Came from a house slave treated with spite.
