De-Feated Poem by Sadiqullah Khan

De-Feated

An eye open
Incessant
Lid-less
Rolled over
Thrown in one
Direction.

A hand extended
For gold coins
Smiles worn
On each other’s faces.

A gun shot
Dead body dragged
War’s won
All else
De-feated.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This painting, Remnants of an Army (by Lady Elizabeth Butler) , shows the wounded and half-dead Dr. William Brydon, an assistant surgeon, arriving at the gates of Jellalabad (Jalalabad) . Brydon was thought to be the sole survivor of a 16,000 strong British expeditionary force during a 90 mile retreat from Kabul over snow-covered mountain passes to Jellalabad during the First Afghan War (1839-1842) . This retreat was one of the bloodiest defeats in British colonial history. @ Encyclopedia Afghanistan
