Defeated. Original Gayatri Phukan Translated By Bibekananda Choudhury

DEFEATED
The last day
The last night
The last light
Each moment passed in anxiety
The days are dead
The nights remain awake

We were powerful
Or were we too proud
Was there
a sky
the air
under our feet
We were the ones
Who ruled over the world
We were the ones
Who imprisoned God
in temples mosques churches
We turned ourselves into
A shrewd businessman each
Our bank balance, mansions
State of the art towns and cities

Aren't we the despotic human race
That tries to occupy other planets
We are the people
Driving our vehicles
over dogs and cats
at breakneck speed

We thought
the Earth belongs only to us
we should understand
the Earth had never been
only for the mankind

Then why
The human race
that proudly declares to have
reigned over all the
sea sky rivers hills mountains
in a false sense of pride
lay defeated today?
