Door Poem by Gayatri Phukan

Door

DOOR
Original: Assamese: Gayatri Pkukan
Sometimes
The doors needs to be closed willingly
Through the gaps in the screen
Moonlight would trickle in
The light that would form the
Stairs of light.

The dust-storm of spring
Would be stopped outside
If one knows
When to open
When to shut the door tightly
Need to understand
When to open
When to close
Even for the beggers
The door is to be opened
A seat is to be offered
Sometimes the door
Needs to be closed
For a so-called aristocratic visitor
The door is only for
Light, laughter
And a bagful of dreams.

Translation: Bibekananda Choudhury
