Deflating Peace In Mali Poem by Kimberly Burnham

Deflating Peace In Mali

I imagine a blowup doll
at peace in Timbuktu
a real place where they speak
Ansongo like a song

æ̀lxer-æn means peace
and welfare
as if there can only be peace
if all
have their welfare looked after

læ̀hæssæ-t means calm
but s-ællæ̀hæssæ-t
to calm down also means
disinflate and pacify

As if the ego must be deflated
in order for peace
to flow on the out breath
pacifying all that hear the song
