Late night bus.

The woman
opens the book.

I can see everything.

Over her shoulder
I can decipher the inscription.

“To Tania love Tony
Christmas ’66.

Then a heart and 3 kisses.

Such nice neat précised calligraphy.

She kicks off
her high heel shoes.

Puts one nylon stockinged foot
over the other

then rubs one up and down her leg
in rhythm to her reading

as if she were a cricket
at home by the fire.

Laughs quietly to her self.

Turns a page.
Adjusts her stockings.
Laughs.

The whole journey
I wonder what the book can be.

Only at the last stop I see.
