Don'T Poem by gershon hepner

Don'T

Protect me, Jennie Holzer said,
from what I want,
and help to make it read, unled
by rhyming, “don’t.”

The future, it’s her favorite line,
is somewhat stupid;
this opinion’s also mine,
though we can’t stop it.

Edward Lewine writes about Jennie Holzer in the NYT Magazine (“Domains: Art House, ” December 20,2009) :

AGE: 59
OCCUPATION: Artist
CURRENT PROJECT: 'Vegas, ' an electronic array of her texts from 'Truisms' and other projects, began its permanent display in the MGM CityCenter in Las Vegas this month….
3. Most-used lines: It’s a tie between “Protect me from what I want” and “Abuse of power comes as no surprise, ” I would guess. I don’t have Nielsen ratings. I have no stats…
31. Favorite line of the moment: “The future is stupid.”
