Drowning Poem by Joseph Cross

Drowning

All is darkness.
I see a shimmering light ahead.
I cannot breathe; I cannot escape.
I am a prisoner to the sea.
I scream without screaming,
I flail and kick,
But I can’t break the surface.
I can’t reach the air.
I start to see lights,
Floating in my eyes.
The darkness returns,
And to my surprise,
I finally breathe, and open my eyes.
And from my bed,
Through the window,
I see ocean waves against the skies.
How did I get here from beneath the sea?
The only answer is a dream.
