Dry Leaves Poem by Unnikrishnan Sivasankara Menon

Dry Leaves

Rating: 5.0

Dry Leaves
have a story to tell
a sad story
of merciless betrayal
of yellowed fate
smothered voice
blackened life.

every leaf is born
in the pink of health
grows green with life
endure the gusts of wind
and burning sun
to nourish the tree;
its health and growth,
colours of flowers
their fragrance
the nectar
the flesh of fruit
the life esconsed
in the countless seeds
everything starts here.

then comes Autumn
the Spring of leaves!
but they now fear
even a smiling breeze
of losing foothold
the gray fears
and the fall!

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

The lush green leaves of the trees change colours at the end of summer, as temperatures start falling. Although "Spring is far behind", the trees are adorned by leaves of all bright colours for a few weeks. By the end of Autumn the trees would be denuded of their leaves.

There is a brilliant saying in Malayalam: when the dry leaf falls, the green ones laugh
