En La Sangre Poem by G J Salgado

En La Sangre

You're always making threats
One day what's coming to you is exactly what you're gonna get
Who cares if your cousin is an attorney
I've got ADA, DA's and judges willing to swing for me
Even got some homies on parole including murderers they have me around their necks in lockets
They'd do anything for me I have them all in my back pocket
So don't play me out to be a fool
You never know which card I'm going to pull
All of my brown and red friends sit upon the tribal council

We always have a house full
My tribe will always have my back
My family has it made for generations and generations to come
It will never be over when it's all said and done

You never really saw me
Never made me feel part of the family
I was an outcast, castaway, a runaway
I ran and found my own way
I found my own family
One I'll never leave
The kind that that helps me breathe
The one that lets me just be me
You always made me feel like I wasn't ever gonna be enough
Life slipped away so far I was out of touch
But I learned to take it all in and be tough
Tougher than nails
I won't fail
Treated me like I was nothing
Turned myself into something
More than you ever were; who were you
Where were you when I needed you
I found a family that took me in as their own
Made friends for life creating a home
My friends are brown and red
I'll never forget what you said
The memory fades
But the pain is still the same
I taught my own self how to swim in the flood
Because I know that I can choose my family but I can't choose my blood
Good thing I've been reborn
From a life that left me torn
Every family has their own favorites
I've never been one but I haven't found any yet
It doesn't really bother me much anymore at all
Sometimes I take a look back, lift my head up; and remember to stand tall

It's your last chance so what are you going to do
Because my blood wasn't, isn't, and never will be meant for you
So what do you want with me
All this time you haven't changed throughout the years
I'm tired of crying; there's no salt left in these tears
Why are you so salty
Suddenly you're so thirsty
Why are you so hungry
Tienes hambre
Es mio; en la sangre
