Endless War Poem by DM W

Endless War

Rating: 5.0

The light has died in these weary soldiers' eyes
As the world is riddled with endless war;
As fighter planes hover like birds of prey;
O look at these bruised blue - black, wounded skies!
O cities on fire in the Persian night! ;
Buildings are now crumbling into dust.

Children scream among the rubble and dust.
Their fragile dreams are broken in the night.
Then, the stark sound of silence fills the skies
Metal hunters stalk their skeletal prey.
They're the cold, calculated godsof war.
The future is ripped out of people's eyes.

Although they call out to God as they pray,
All they can perceive are grey clouds of dust
No healing grace descends from tender skies.
No angels appear before waiting eyes.
Only Moloch is satisfied by war.
His triumphant roars permeate the night.

No pure light of dawn; all is endless night
Moloch prepares to strike as people pray.
He instructs his armies to prolong war.
He observes all things with ten thousand eyes.
He commands the land, the sea and the skies.

Yet more metal birds of prey fill the skies
As Moloch covers everything in night
Nothing passes his ever watchful eyes,
He will devour everyone of his prey.
He wants to grind everyone into dust.
He spits on peace and promotes endless war.

Neo- cons keep on beating the drums of war.
Their warped weapons rule over weary skies.
Their legacy is blood & bones & dust.
They will not go gently into the night.
Money is their god and life is their prey.
All I see are dollar signs in their eyes.

When all is dust, will cruel war continue?
Will our tired eyes look towards bluer skies?
Will new dreams grace the night? I hope and pray.

It never ceases to amaze me the myriad of poetic hard hitting ways war can be depicted. And depicted so well and bitter sweet. Your poem Domini fits into that deserved category. You mention Moloch a few times, were you inspired by Milton's Paradise Lost. For so few know of him. Five stars and more than richly deserved for your sinewy, thought provoker of a poem. Take care and many thanks for writing and sharing. Take care.

I'm aware of Moloch via the bible. However, I've recently been reading Howl by Allen Ginsberg to aid me with the main poem I'm working on for the course. In the second part of his rather long free verse poem...he brings up Moloch (via lots of anaphora) to personify U.S capitalism and the military industrial complex...powerful stuff. The poem is my first attempt at a sestina and was pretty pain- staking to compose. I'm pleased it spoke to you.
