Ellie Corbin

Equal - Poem by Ellie Corbin

dancing on the gym floor in your pink dress
with bare feet, dirty feet, with purple painted toenails
and the music blasting out a Spanish song
and then a slow one, and then a popular one
all the girls in their high heels and kissable lips
all the boys in their button-downs and dark pants
and singing along even though you can't sing
swaying and twirling and moving to the beat
watching a slide show of little fifth-graders
making funny faces for the camera
those fifth-graders wer you, long ago
all 150 of you standing, hands linked, in a circle
holding your friend's hand on the right
and your enemie's on the left
listening to 'Graduation' by Vitamin C
and the circle of people fills the gym
fills it with memories and happiness
and you know we're all the same.
