Fear - Poem by Robert Mugobi

In her absence I always think of her
I get this urge to go and see her
But like the roots that hold a tree in one place
It deters me from going to look for her

It doesn’t stop me from liking her
It doesn’t stop me from loving her
Whether in her absence or in her presence
But it halts me from telling her

As if the ‘words’ are some sort of enemy,
It barricades my lips every time I’m around her
It sees to it that those ‘words’ do not come out

It has furnished my mouth with a fortress
That blocks only the confession of my feelings for her, from coming out
It allows me to say every other word in her presence
But it makes sure that it has barred me from openly declaring my to her

I’m talking about that blockade
That deters me from asking her out
I’m talking about fear
