First Date Poem by D.N. Rebb

First Date

The start of any liaison, oft the simplest
With unmapped correspondents naively steering
Just like a novice driver, inexperienced
Yet eager for this new untested beginning
Motoring down the road, encircled by an arm
A dirt trail leading into perfect paradise
Fueling at a truck stop, the cashier kinda winks
Snagging a six pack, some chips, and a bag of ice
The gentle waves greet like an old seasoned reverend
An overwhelming willow baits its shielded shade
The southern breeze offers its hospitality
Noisy seagulls invite you to join their parade
Two beers are cracked, customary cheers are announced
The perfect opportunity for that first kiss
Both can't believe this is just Thursday afternoon
Could this foreseeable weekend even top this?
Time to dare each other to a near-skinny dip
An opportunity to check out either's body
Like a pair of first graders, they are a splashin'
Holding each other up, the ground's kinda rocky
The second kiss, now just a tad more extended
Both simultaneously fall, like a house o' cards
Laughing as loud as a live Carlin's audience
A warm dry towel though, neither had regarded
The above sun looks down and admires these two
As they use one shirt to towel each other off
It's seen this sweet innocence many times before
There is money on the fact they'll soon be in love
