Fishing With Dolphins In Laguna Poem by Stephen Katona

A dolphin called Caroba,
Helps fishermen in Laguna,
A coastal town in Brazil,
With her unusual skill.

Her father, Galha taught her plenty,
And all her family numbered twenty,
Helping many fishermen,
Since eighteen forty-seven.

Two hundred relying on just a score,
Thanks to an unusual rapport.
Caroba sees in men's eyes need,
Of wives and children to feed.

She knows how to control,
From far out a mullet shoal.
To the shore she steers,
Whenever lots of fish appear.

To Red Head, a man who wears a hat,
To Round Body, another rather fat,
To Seaweed Face, one with a beard,
Of all of them, he looks most weird.

Into the shallows the fish are harassed,
Then she signals for nets to be cast,
With nods and slaps towards the beach,
She even understands some human speech.

Great numbers of fish are caught,
Thanks to skills they've all been taught.
These men know how to share,
Of others needs they are aware.
