For Each Of Us A Last Day Poem by Francis Duggan

For Each Of Us A Last Day

For each of us a last day whether it be soon or late
For each of us it does seem will share a similar fate
Like all other living creatures one day we have to die
With chemistry we may fight ageing but to the reaper we cannot lie,
For each of us a last day the reaper bides his time
He takes the very old and the very young and those still in their prime
One has to give him credit he does not differentiate
Not ageist or not racist he does not discriminate,
Not alone for the paupers but for every billionaire
For each and everyone of us a last gulp in of air
Your successes or failures with the reaper never count
With every passing second the toll of his scythe mount
For each of us a last day is it that and nothing more
Though many believe in a life beyond this Earthly Shore?
