For Zama Ngiba's Birthday On 10 October 2010 Poem by Diana van den Berg

For Zama Ngiba's Birthday On 10 October 2010

Zama dear,
you are on the brink
of a new year.

It’s a big step
into a new world
buzzing with good and bad
with choices,
some clear,
some confusing,
some tempting,
but you are ready,
with that warm, beautiful smile,
to take that first step,
carefully with your soul-seated confidence,
with your natural grace,
with your sweet, sweet graciousness,
with your oak tree courage,
with your sky-wide faith,
with your gentle humility,
with your glowing kindness,
with your warm compassion,
with your lily-pure honesty,
and because you will cling
fiercely
to the you
whom you are,
how
could
you
possibly
go wrong?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This was Zama Ngiba's last birthday at St Monica's Children's Home. She had to leave at the end of the year because she would be finishing school. She asked me to write her a poem for her birthday.
