of years a tree has been alive,
as well as how well the tree did thrive.

Tree ring dating is called dendrochronology.
It has applications in paleoecology
which is the study of fossils and their life cycle.
It is also useful for art history and archeology.

The mountain pine beetle is devastating forests
in western Mexico, Canada and United States.
It has been happening since ancient times,
but has become severe in the latest dates.

Management techniques include pesticides,
pheromone baiting, snip & skid, and fall & burn.
None of those is working very well,
But the Forest Service's are trying to learn.
