Friendship - Poem by Wallis minten

I was surrounded by the darkness
All I saw was black
I could not move forwards
I was stuck in the past.

I was cold and alone
Before you found me
And would light the candle
That would set me free.

Your hand slid into mine
And led me through the dark
You gave me new hope
You gave me a new start.

Little by little
We gained the trust
That we would keep
And need so much.

When I was lost
You answered my plea
When you were blinded
I helped you see.

And forever we will stand
Side by side
And will do so
Until we die.

Poet's Notes about The Poem

I wrote this poem after I finished middle school. I had always been different, so I didn't have any friends. It didn't help that I had been pulling out my hair, (I really was pulling out my hair because of stress, I am not using the expression) , so I had bald spots in my hair. I had sunk into a type of depression, and I didn't smile for those two years. Then, in 8th grade, I met a girl named Navashia. She was a lot like me. But instead of having stress problems, she was slow minded. She had been made fun of for years, but she still kept her head high. We became friends almost at once. She gave me back the strength to face the world. I helped her with school work, so we both passed school with flying colors. She has gone to a different high school, but we still keep in touch. She is one of the most amazing people I have ever met.
