Alas, should Mother Nature be so caring
Nurture my Spring garden lush and green
I stand among the cucumbers despairing
Looking over shriveled squash and beans
No rain clouds to rescue thirsty May flowers
The corn drooping, no plump kernels seen
If nature could have mercy but an hour
I'd be content for one pepper I could grope
Stop hourly checking on the sky for showers
How sad not one turnip to lift a man's hope
How sad no reaping, what sight a grown man weeping
His last tears given for a cantaloupe.
