God Was There When I Was Not Poem by Gloria Comingore

God Was There When I Was Not

I was born in a womb with no soul, but God was there.
I had a mother who cared not, but God was there.
My mother wanted me dead, but God was there.
She messed up my mind, but God was there.

She never heard the tears that I cried, but God was there.
She gave me away, but God was there.
She took me back, but didn't care, but God was there.
She gave me nothing to live for, but God was there.

My body was there, my mind was not, but God was there.
I was left with no memory of that time, but God was there.
He showed me pieces at a time, as I started to come back, but God was there.
He held me in his arms and dried my tears as my memory came back, but God was there.

He gave me hope, instead of despair, but God was there.
He sheltered me from my mother's anger, but God was there.
His love for me was greater than the brightest sun above, because God was there, and he loved me before I was born.
