Goodnight Irene Poem by Joseph Anderson

Goodnight Irene

Rating: 5.0

My mother-in-law, Irene by name
Is the leader of her clan.
At ninety-three, you surely see
Why I became her fan.

Though struck with polio at two,
That didn't dim her fire;
To work and strive and keep her drive,
Remained her big desire.

She wedded, birthed and schooled her kids,
That alone should merit fame.
Seven lively daughters she brought forth
And one of them I claim.

It seems a shame, some garner fame,
While others stay unknown;
But few amidst life's mingling crowds,
Know courage, like she's shown.

It's getting late, so now I go
To think on other themes;
To quote I'll say ''Goodnight Irene',
I'll see you in my dreams.-1998

This grand old lady passed on in 2005-
at 100 years of age-a truly remarkable
person.

Your title caught my attention immediately, because my Grandfather's favorite song was Good Night, Irene. He used to sing it to me when I was little because he liked it and I liked hearing him sing it. Your mother-in-law sounds like she was a fantastic person, you were blessed when she entered your life in more ways than just your wife. A very inspiring poem, I loved it! Thank you for sharing. My grandmother suffered a similar plight. But Irene—marrying, then birthing and schooling seven children—GIRLS— (despite her physical challenge) , even has my grandmother beat. This one is “off the charts.” Irene is smiling. A phenomenal job, Joseph. At eighty seven, I’m so glad you’re yet with us to share of your wisdom and inspiration. Thank you much. PS: I, too, have written about my grandmother, and plan to post it when I get the chance.10+++++
