by M. Eminescu (1850-1889)
At night, when my spirit watches in ecstasies,
I see my guardian angel, like in dreams,
With a coat girded with shades and rays,
How above me — with a smile — he stretches his wings.
But as soon as I see you in a white fur,
Woman you, full of desire and mystery,
That angel runs away from your conquering eye.
You are a demon, woman you. Since only with smiles
From your long eyelashes, from your large eyes,
You force my angel to fly scared.
Is he my sacred guardian and my faithful friend?
Or it may be that he has shut your long eyelids,
So I can discern your fair traits.
Since you… You are my guardian angel.
