Heatwave 2022 Poem by Patricia Denise Newman

Heatwave 2022

I'm hiding here inside my house
fans blowing a welcome breeze
It's hot! I'm hot! It's sweltering!
IT'S 35 DEGREES! !

Yet looking back, remembering
on holidays gone by
I delighted in hot sunny days
and the endless true blue sky

The laughter, fun and sparkling seas
days spent on a foreign shore
filter through my memories
of what had gone before

This heat however is not so kind
relentless in its way
it saps the energy, dulls the mind
leaving a desert in its sway

Sunshine burns the brown dead grass
beneath a too blue sky
no breeze disturbs the lifeless trees
silent stillness hangs nearby

The birds are still and sheltering
away from this smouldering heat
You really cannot blame them
they are hiding - just like me!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
2022 July and August in England temperatures reached above 40 degrees in several counties, too hot for people like me more used to cooler conditions. I well remember the last time we had such high temperatures in 1976.
