His Freedom Poem by Diana van den Berg

His Freedom

She called down to the bottom of the garden,
where she knew he was picking berries,
but didn’t know whether he was hiding in fun
or truly didn’t hear her
or because he was irritated by her conversation
and wanted to get away –

and she went indoors again
without knowing
giving him his wish
whichever way.
