Hope. Poem by Michael Walker

Hope.

Rating: 5.0

('Hope springs eternal in the human breast'. Alexander Pope (1688-1774) . From 'An Essay On Man') .

Hope is more practical than St. Paul's two other religious virtues.
Hope sustains us in the present; and well into the future,
which may turn out extremely well or extremely badly.
Hope may be a religious virtue but it is also worldly.

Patience and Endurance are the friends of Hope.
Together these three virtues will get you through
times of serious ill health and financial worries.
Times when you moved to a new town, searching.

Many hope for wealth and a spacious, well-built house
on a large section, then a rambling mansion and more property:
Others expect fame and prestige through their wealth;
they wish to be on the newspapers' rich list yearly.

Most hope to find romantic love by careful choosing.
It is a game you will probably win, but could lose.
To be dumped by your girlfriend is like a shock,
but in time you should recover and find a new love.

Comparatively few hope to succeed as writers,
in fiction or nonfiction, poet or playwright.
Success may await the novice writer who keeps hoping
and practises every day, improving by fine-tuning.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I found this older poem of mine when rummaging through my early drafts last night. The two other religious virtues in the first line are faith and charity. I do think it is important to have hope even when things look hopeless for you and have done so for a long time. To get out of a period of prolonged unhappiness you need patience; you need to endure like King Lear: 'In such a night/ To shut me out-
-Pour on; I will endure.' 'King Lear: Act III, scene 4., by William Shakespeare.
I found this quote by St. Paul in the Jerusalem Bible: 'In short there are three things that last: faith, hope, and charity;
and the greatest of these is charity (love) .1 Corinthians,13: 13.
I think that Hope relates more to the problems of everyday life, than Faith and Charity (Love) . Hope is more help to you in a crisis, when things are not going well for you. Indeed, Hope can mould your character and make you stronger after an ordeal.

'I Have A Dream', by Abba. (1979) .

A well written poem about hope and it's forms. I love the advice for writers. Practice, patience and perseverance are three important ingredients to increasing success.

Remaining in hope is important part in life. Hope definitely sustains for us now and for future too. Patience and Endurance are the real friends of Hope. You have nicely observed and expression of this interesting poem improves opportunity to keep hope ahead. Hope remains behind every success. Very well crafted poem is shared here....10

Thanks for your observations. This was very much a poem drawn from personal experience-the difficulties that I have had to face in my life. Problems that are still going on. Hope is both a religious virtue, and a secular virtue(of this world, practical) . You could easily have hope without being religious at at all, I think.

I wonder if 'charity' covers all forms of love, Michael?

It is meant to, but not romantic love, more like disinterested love for other people in general. The Jerusalem Bible uses the word 'love' instead of 'charity', but that is not completely right either, as there are forms of love that are not religious. When a word has many shades of meaning, you just have to accept the shortcomings of whatever word you choose, as I see it.
