How Words Came Poem by Denis Mair

How Words Came

Rating: 5.0

Within a cave, wintering in...

no deeper lurking than in such long gloom.

Human hibernation is an incubation

that encounters a bear,

watches birds fly south,

imagines being all the beasts in turn.

That's when the stories stir.

They have to be spoken,

so words come to give them wings

out of the people's mouths.
