I Am A Tree Poem by Theresa Ann Moore

I Am A Tree

Sprouting from a seed
basking in the sunlight
gaining strength in the rain
resisting the wind…staying upright

Feeling immature standing in shadows
of the elders that tower over me
learning that with persevering patience
the time will come for me to be a tall tree

Over the years, squirrels and birds
have taken refuge on my limbs…spying
to the ground below…seeking
my protection… not ready for dying

Gathers have place picnic blankets
beneath my boughs seeking
generous shade…enjoying their food
on a hot summer day…happily eating

My branches have reached as high
as I am able…I am fortunate to be free
I've been a part of a forest… I've been
recognizes as outstanding occasionally

Long years have been spent enjoying
the happiness bestowed on me
now I feel a stiffing in my branches...
my energy no longer nourishes leaves

I see a seedling growing nearby
noticing that it is looking up to see
I witness its rapid growth and realize
It won't be long before it replaces me
