I Don't Know - Poem by Kelly Kurt

I have researched the most profound
Asked questions all have pondered
Considered the evidence of experts
Examined my own inner desires
Overruled the patently ridiculous
Assessed the reasonable possibilities
No delusion has convinced
Before I was; I wasn't
After I'm no longer
I won't again
Little comfort in reality
No wonder why faith is soothing, traditional
If truth matters
Just say the three words
They don't force insecurities into precepts
No inferred certainties
They leave doors open
Do you know?
I don't

The universe seems to be expanding faster than our ability to understand it, and we don't even have a grip on understanding ourselves, yet more and more people are less and less concerned with asking the truly deep questions, questions that cannot be answered by Did you try turning it off and back on again? I don't know where the switch is. : -)
So many people either just pretend they know, or in lieu of an answer, invoke a god as the explanation.

This is exquisite, nothing can compare to faith. (Report) Reply

And nothing is as comforting as truth

No wonder why faith is soothing, traditional
    If truth matters
    Just say the three words
They don't force insecurities into precepts
    No inferred certainties
They leave doors open................... I think I have understood what you really meant! But the border between real truth and inferred truths is quite narrow and difficult to distinguish! So to say the three words 'I Don't Know is easier and safer! Very philosophical!

Thank you, Valsa. It is often uncomfortable to admit you don't know, but I find it better than making up answers

When; I don't know, is the truth, I feel better saying that than substituting wild speculation as the truth

A philosophical question! Do you know? I only know that I do not know! One should seek answers even if he gets none! (Report) Reply

Epistemology is a fascinating topic to explore. Thanks, Leloudia

Reality may be harsh sometimes but it is all we have and we should strive to understand it

I don't know either. I am trained in the scientific method for my work and, of course, this view, permeates other aspects of my life. I believe in faith and envy those who can find so much peace and love in their faith. Personally, I struggle in this area; and I try to find the absolute beauty in this life that exists right here in front of us on a daily basis. I wish us all peace and love and thank you, Kelly, for challenging your readers to think, regardless of their personal beliefs. We can all grow from considering the viewpoints of others, even when they may differ from our own, and we can continue to respect one another. I love the last four lines of this write: No inferred certainties
    They leave doors open
    Do you know?
    I don't

    Thanks for sharing.

The dictionary definition of faith is; The purposeful suspension of critical thought. I respect all people but the very concept of faith makes me shudder.

The default position should be doubt.

In essence, it is not a bad thing to say; I don't know. People either take that statement as a failure of some sort, or substitute a wild guess to appease themselves. I see it as an opportunity to seek what is closest to truth

The aliens that came in Japan were of our size and similar in shape, could give sons to the wombs and they gave. Right were Japanese who claimed they were sons of Gods. The aliens that came to us, large in size, couldn't give us more than test tube babies. Think why the story of our grand grand grand grand parents is heard and read only in Sumerian civilization. Great was Einstein who gave the theory of relativity, I see Gods are also relative. Gods for us are creature for another Gods and it's a cycle having no beginning no end like space and time. My Dear Friend! Neither we are in a position to deny nor to accept. So enjoy the life but in a controlled manner. Let the beliefs control the humans. (Report) Reply

When the beliefs lead to injustices and to minds closed to the world of reality, I want to do my small part to encourage critical thinking. I do not deny or accept anything without using that faculty and gladly say I don't know, before substituting an unfounded claim, that in its essence is unknowable.
