I thought I saved you,
When I pushed you away
I thought I saved you,
When I held you at bay.
Since that day,
I’ve come to terms with you being away.
I thought I did right,
By keeping you from that awful sight.
But now I will always regret,
That terrible night.
When I thought I saved you.
You’re gone.
And that’s all right.
The thought that you may find a better life.
Helps me get some sleep at night.
But my heart aches,
And I don’t know what to think.
Either I saved you,
Or I let our love sink.
I hurt,
Bad.
But I wish you well.
Now that I see you’ve fell. I…
I thought I saved you...
From me.

Sometimes it is hard to decide if letting go is better than holding on. Nicely written poem from the heart.

The title of this poem drew me into it. There is a bitter irony here, because the best of intentions apparently did not bring about the best of consequences. And that's exactly what your poem reveals. At the very end you explain the context and I think you were right in withholding such information until the end. I felt myself unhinged reading it, I could identify with both your attempt to do the right thing, and the other person's lost state. Your Poet's Note explains this poem was spontaneous, a spur of the moment poem so there is raw emotion at every turn. You could re-write it as a focused poem, but that would be a different poem. And it would not evoke the reaction I had. Some poems are best left in their immediate form with their raw energy. This is one of them.
