If God Is Now Officially Dead Poem by William Jackson

If God Is Now Officially Dead

Rating: 4.9

if god is now officially dead
or never existed at all
as some experts have said,
then what is man,
(formerly made in God's image) ,
but a teaming mass of grunion,
writhing and copulating
on the shoreline of a dark abyss.

indeed, if god has been long dead,
then man's ongoing aspirations
to build an even better world
for each successive generation
died with him in the distant past.
yet, the question still remains;
to what hope, to what magnanimous end
is mankind evolving?

though in the distant days of old
men strived and struggled to know God,
poets, incomplete in their revelations
at least understood as Paul once said,
'For in Him we live and breathe
and have our being.'

but, now we reject completely
the wisdom of our forefathers.
all must silently acquiesce
beneath the towering pinnacle
of all man's achievements,
the realization that there is
no god other than man himself.
our ancestors
knew absolutely nothing
about true origins of life,
the bioelectrical & chemical reactions
that make us
who we are.
god is quite anthropomorphic,
a figment made in man's image.

today god must reveal all things,
all the secrets of the universe,
especially with regard to himself,
and this must be done
with mathematical precision
if we are to believe anything,
or acknowledge god's existence.

we the champions of reason
and unbiased objectivity
resolutely demand our rights
to absolute full disclosure.
we will not show even
the slightest bit of gratitude
or any sense of obligation
until then.

if we drink emptyness
and a most terrifying isolation,
it is our chosen cup to drink.

as for me, i will defer
to the goodness of God
who has eternal resources
the world will never know

surely God is
the source and
origin of all life.
it matters not
if this truth
is acknowledged.
God is.
the sun shines,
and people either
stand in the light
to their benefit
or
hide in the darkness
to their dismay.

the Word is calling
after all of mankind,
but few are listening
to the love song.
the Word is calling.
but, oh,
how few believe it.
the Word is calling
as from the beginning,
'Come unto Me.
I am the Bread of Life.
He who believes in me,
from his innermost being,
shall flow rivers of living water.'
He who
has ears
to hear,
let him
listen.

Your poem asks a huge question WJ. I don't think there is anyone who can answer! The future isn't our to determine, imo All we can do, is our best in the now. I believe there are enough voices in the world today however, to steer us safely, one way or another into the future. But that is just me....Miss Tai Chi, full of positivity. Great read indeed.

Very well written! A person who tries to understand God, is no better than a psychiatrist. ' I do not waste valuable time trying to understand the complexity of the human mind. I leave such an assignment to the only one with the qualifications for such a task, The creator himself!

this was so uplifting..... and I say 'uplifting' only because I am sure that there are any people thinking the same exact things that you have touched upon here... but are afraid or don't know how to articulate it. you have done it very well here.... this was an awesome poem... I enjoyed every minute of it kay

An intellectual proclamation of man and his relationship to his Deity and man's nature in wanting to know and achieving explanation. But as Albert Einstein once said, 'The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mystery.' And it all boils down to that the more we learn, the less we realize we really know and that we should just have faith and accept. A very good piece. - K.

This is one of those poems that christians must say they like, otherwise they'll feel bad or god will be insulted or something. Although I like the set up of the poem, I do not agree with the plot. However, that matters little.

amen to this...i especially love the what is man if made in the image of line...and yes...those who find no need for intelligence behind intelligant design...well what an oxymoron that is...but not just the message, also the way that the poem decreases line length toward the final lines...like drawing conclusions...making the answer simple

This is just an amazing poem. You've obviously thought deeply, and shared a unique perspective. It's nice to see a fellow Texan - stung into poetry - stung into wisdom. Visionary stuff, here. I'm glad I found it.

William, The dance of belief and disbelief-how far we've come with our own demands on who God is, whiny and pitiful, to say the least. Yet understandable, how lost and fearful human kind is, and what have we learned to listen to-If truth doesn't come in a 20 second sound byte, then what good is it? I like your stream of consciousness and open-heartedness. Thanks, friend, Phillip
