'In My Land' - Poem by Anthony Seyi Abiodun

In my land
A politician can steal from the public purse
It is a sure place to acquire a lot
A pastor can marry his member’s wife
God is lenient, He will forgive
A teacher can aid and abet exam malpractice
Once there is money your grade is good
A trader can sell with false measure
Buyers at times bring fake currency
A policeman can collect bribe on the road
It is for self-maintenance, try and understand
A culprit can roam freely on the street
Who will be the political thug for next election?
Education can have a paltry share in the budget
It is capital intensive, we gain nothing
Our president can leave the country for so long
Nothing to fear, we are mature enough
To take care of ourselves against odds
These and many more happen in my land
I think you can guess where I come from
